It’s been a while since I’ve given much thought to the idea of running 26.2 miles. So far this year, I’ve been wrapped up in racing 5ks/10ks and now, training for a half marathon. Even the 13.1 seems daunting right now, since I’ve been slacking a little in the workout department and stuffing my face with foods a runner shouldn’t touch with a 10ft pole.

Let me remind everyone that I’m not attempting my 3hr 10min NY Marathon this year. I’m attempting to Boston qualify in NYC 2010, which means that I still have plenty of time to get on the ball. And despite a recent plateau I’m in much better shape than I’ve ever been before.

Now before I dive back into the NY Marathon with an anticipated improvement of 30 minutes, I’ve decided that I first need to dip my proverbial toe back in the pond. So I’d like to split the difference by running about 3:25 in an early-spring marathon. Now… when and where to do it?

I’ve run the Miami Half before (www.ingmiamimarathon.com), so I considered running the full race distance early next year. But Miami is on January 31st and I get back from my honeymoon the second week in September. That leaves me enough time to train, but barely. I also considered the Disney Marathon (http://tr.im/Disney26) which is on January 10th, but the other factor I’m up against is the cost of hotel and travel.

So I need an early spring marathon that’s in a snowbird state and won’t cost me more than the price of entry and an airline ticket. Pretty strict criteria, where am I going to find that? Easy. Crash with my parents in sunny St. Petersburg, FL and run the Gasparilla Marathon in Tampa on February 28th (www.tampabayrun.com).

Not only is this a perfect race for me in terms of timing and expenses, but Gasparilla is an exciting time in Tampa, complete with…

…there are plenty of great running tv shows coming up in the next few weeks. If you don’t live in NY and have TWC, check your local listings.

This week in Universal Sport’s marathon update, the experts tackle a tough question: Which spring marathon has more prestige, Boston or London? And guess what… it’s NOT Boston!

Boston 2009

  • Won by Deriba Merga, 4th in Beijing
  • Winning time of 2:08:42
  • Finish line at Copley Square
  • Historic course but has rolling hills + headwinds
  • A far distance to travel for international champs
  • “Boston is where 2nd tier guys go to win big money” — Duncan Larkin

London 2009

  • Won by Sammy Wanjiru, gold medalist
  • Winning time of 2:05:10, a course record
  • Finish line at Buckingham Palace
  • Speedy course, 2 minutes faster than Boston
  • Geographically desirable for African talent
  • Huge “appearance fees” = better competitors

And a few more notes from the world of marathoning…

Here’s a Boston Marathon article appearing in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal that’s causing controversy in the marathon community. As a marathoner training to run Boston, I have to say I’m a little insulted. I did a quick search on www.Athlinks.com and uncovered that the author Matthew Futterman has run the NY Marathon twice, once in 1996 and 1997. He posted a respectable 3:34:59 in the ‘96 race and slowed to a 4:05:18 in ‘97. Maybe he’s just jealous that he never BQ’d…

Boston Marathon Is a Downhill Battle

By MATTHEW FUTTERMAN

It may be the world’s most famous and historic endurance race, but there’s a little-known secret about the Boston Marathon that everyone who has braved Heartbreak Hill might not want to hear: It’s downhill. Not only that, since the 26.2 mile race scheduled for Monday travels largely in one direction, runners occasionally enjoy the sort of tailwind that can make the course feel like one of those moving walkways at the airport.

In fact, the slope (how much the race drops in elevation from start to finish) and the separation (the distance, as the crow flies, between the start line and the finish line) are so severe that runners can’t set official world or U.S. records during it. The Road Running Technical Council has determined that Boston drops 3.2 meters for every kilometer and has a 91% separation between its start and finish. This means the course goes nearly in one direction as it makes its way from Hopkinton, elevation 125 meters, to sea level in downtown Boston…
