Run As One 4-Miler = 24:40

I decided to run this morning’s NYRR race in Central Park, the Run as One 4 Miler, an excellent choice on my part. The threat of poor weather was an idle one, as the temperatures were ideal for racing and the wind was barely noticeable. With 11,000 runners I’m glad I chose to start at the very front of the pack. I heard that it took up to 15 minutes for some people to make it to the starting line after the gun went off.

The competition in the first coral was stiff, but the majority of people were there to show solidarity in the fight against lung cancer (which I guess justifies the steep $40 race day entry fee, for those of you counting that’s $10 per mile). Race results aren’t up yet, however I’m guessing there were only about 30-40 runner’s ahead of me, so my time of 24:40 is one to be proud of. Especially since this race was kind of a trial run for next month’s Healthy Kidney 10k.

The first 3 miles I paced myself between 6:15 – 6:20 in anticipation of the cumulative effect of all the hills. Turns out I’m not as bad with them as I make myself out to be, because by the end of mile 3, I had enough fuel in my tank to run a 5:40 final mile (which was admittedly, about 90% downhill). At any rate, I finished off the race feeling like another 2 miles would have been manageable at my average 6:10 pace, which sets me up to finish the 6.2 miles in under 39 minutes no problem. Maybe I should change my blog name to NYC in 2:59!

Great race! Wish I could dash off 6:00 miles.. but I know it is a lot of work to reach that point. Good luck in your quest!

Let me know if you are seriously thinking of a Garmin. I have a 405, and well, let’s just say I am not sure I would buy that model again. I love the data, but the 405 can be a difficult friend.

i am VERY close to buying a Garmin… but i want to know how accurate they are. ive heard mixed reviews. i was really excited about nike plus at first, but after using it for a few months, i realized im better at guessing my milage than the nike is at “measuring” it. if not the 405, what would you reccomend?
